For children Twente is above all one big outdoor playground. The landscape is varied and manageable: never long distances, always something to discover, and plenty of spots to picnic or just run around.
Into the woods
Start with a short woodland walk, for instance in the Dal van de Mosbeek. The paths are flat, the stream is shallow and clear, and there is plenty to discover: little bridges, ferns, and in warm weather a place to dip your feet. Keep small walkers close; it is a fragile nature area.
A view as reward
A small goal works wonders. The climb to the Kuiperberg is manageable for children and is rewarded with a wide view over the hedgerow landscape. Make a game of it: who spots the towers of Ootmarsum first?
An afternoon in town
Ootmarsum itself, with its winding streets, is fun for children to wander through too. An ice cream on the market square, gallery windows full of colourful work, and enough terraces to sit for a while. The distances are short, so tired feet are soon home again.
Practical
- Plan short stretches with a clear goal; that keeps children going.
- Bring boots or water shoes for the streams.
- Dogs can come along on most walks, leashed in nature areas.
A quiet base
With a fixed address in the centre of Ootmarsum you needn't travel far for any activity. Hotel De Landmarke is central, so you can head into the woods in the morning and be back just as quickly in the afternoon for a rest.
