A narrow clear-flowing Mosbeek through a shaded deciduous wood with ferns and mossy banks in the Dal van de Mosbeek

Along the Mosbeek through the spring woods

Duration

Difficulty

Dog-friendly

The starting point is near the village of Vasse, just north of Ootmarsum. Here you slip into the woods almost at once, where the Mosbeek finds its way through one of the few true brook valleys in the Netherlands.

Along the way

The path follows the stream closely. The water is clear and cool; ferns grow on the banks and moss lies thick on the foot of the trees. In a few places the Mosbeek tumbles over small steps, a rare sound in the flat Netherlands.

Highlight

Halfway, the wood opens onto the Vasserheide. From the edge you look over purple and gold in the late season, with the wood margins as backdrops behind. It is a good place to pause and listen.

Back

You return along the other side of the valley, through older deciduous woodland. The loop is short and flat, easy to do with children or as a quiet morning walk.

Good to know

  • Mostly flat and easy going; partly narrow woodland paths.
  • Dogs are welcome on a leash; this is a fragile spring area.
  • After prolonged rain the paths along the stream can be muddy.

From Hotel De Landmarke

The Dal van de Mosbeek is one of the nature areas between which De Landmarke sits. From the hotel you are there in no time, and after the walk you drive back just as easily for lunch in Ootmarsum.
