The stream valley on the doorstep

Step out of the Winselerhof and you are straight into the Strijthagerbeekdal. Here the Strijthagerbeek rises, fed by springs and seepage water welling up all along the slopes. It is a classic South Limburg stream valley: steep wooded flanks on one side, gentle undulations of grassland and fields on the other. The water spreads wide one moment and vanishes between the trees the next.

Castle, water mill and fish ponds

In the middle of the valley stands Kasteel Strijthagen, a sixteenth-century complex with a water mill and an old ice cellar where bats overwinter. Around it lie fish ponds and the nutrient-poor meadows of the Overste Hof. It is a valley made for aimless wandering, with a different scene at every bend: a mill wheel, a mirroring pond, a farmstead amid the greenery.

Rich with life

The seepage water makes the valley remarkably rich in species. In spring the golden saxifrage flowers yellow along the stream, hairy bittercress flutters between the banks and the yellowhammer sings from the shrubs. With luck you spot signs of the badger, and on sunny days countless butterflies dance above the grassland. This is nature within walking distance, and yet it feels far away.

From the Winselerhof the well-known Pungelroute leads straight into the valley; in just a few kilometres you feel why walkers love to return here.
