Starting point

You set off at the edge of Odoorn, where the village gives way to the woods of the Odoorn forest. The first stretch follows a wide sand path beneath Scots pines; the ground springs underfoot and the air smells of resin and dry needles.

Along the way

The forest soon opens onto bare heath. In late summer it turns purple and hums with bees; in spring you see the fresh green of young heather. Narrow paths wind between small pools and drifting sands, a landscape typical of the Hondsrug.

Highlight

Halfway round you pass an open heath with a clear view — flat land, high sky. Stand still and you mostly hear wind and birds. It is a place to sit a while and let the noise drain from your head.

The way back

The return leads back into the woods, past old cart tracks and oak banks that once marked the edges of the fields. Almost without noticing, you are back at the edge of Odoorn.

Good to know

  • Flat and easy underfoot, suitable for most walkers.
  • Dogs are welcome; keep them leashed where livestock or sheep graze.
  • The heather usually blooms in August — that is when it is at its finest.
  • Stick to the marked paths; the drifting sands are fragile.
