The Land van Maas en Waal is not a region for crowds. It is flat, wide and quiet, exactly what a weekend needs. Two days are enough to get to know the two rivers, the dikes and the villages between them at your ease.
Saturday: into the floodplains on foot
Start gently, with a walk from the Maas. The floodplains near Niftrik offer narrow grass paths, broad meadows and the river always in view. Walk to the ferry and look out over Ravenstein on the far bank, or turn back to the dike at your leisure.
Sunday: cycling past the castles
On the second day, take the bike. The junction network leads you over the dikes past Hernen castle, the ruin of Batenburg and the water of De Gouden Ham near Appeltern. Almost flat, so well within reach on an ordinary bike too.
Along the way: ferries and castles
What makes this weekend special are the transitions: the foot ferries that connect the banks in season, the castles rising above the villages, and the orchards that change colour with the seasons. Do not plan too tightly; the region rewards those who take their time.
Good to know
- The ferries run seasonally; check the times and whether they sail that day in advance.
- Many floodplain paths can be muddy after high water.
- It is open country: bring a windbreaker in wind and water for the way.
Where you stay
A fine base is Hoogeerd in Niftrik, right on the Maas. You walk and cycle from the front door, there is a covered bike store with a charging point, and after a day outside you take a seat at a restaurant overlooking the river.
