Slowing down in the Vechtdal: five ways to find calm

Five quiet ways to slow down in the Vechtdal, from a morning in the spa to a still walk along the Vecht.

Slowing down works best in a place that is already calm. The Vechtdal near Ommen is such a landscape: slow water, old forests and wide heath where little hurries you. Five ways to truly find calm here.

1. Begin with a morning in the spa

Leave the first morning empty. A warm bath, the quiet of a sauna and nothing your diary asks of you. It is the gentlest way to make the shift from home to here.

2. Take a quiet loop along the Vecht

A walk along the river need go nowhere. Follow the bank, watch the water passing slowly, and let your thoughts take the same pace. Early in the morning the path is often yours alone.

3. Cycle through the forest with no aim

Get on the bike and leave the nodes be. The forests around Ommen are flat and shady; all you need do is pedal and look. An hour is enough to clear your head.

4. Eat slowly, eat local

Slowing down happens at the table too. Take your time over an unhurried dinner, with dishes from the region, and let the evening last as long as it likes.

5. End by the water

End the day by the Vecht, glass in hand and the last light over the river. No screen, no plan; only the water and the evening slowly turning dark.

Calm is not a place you travel to, but a pace you take on.
