Laarzenpaden trails in the Vechtdal — experiencing nature up close

New laarzenpaden trails are appearing in the Vechtdal, leading you into the landscape at spots where no through routes normally exist. For those who want to feel nature, not just see it.

27 June 2026

The Vechtdal is at its most beautiful when you are right in the middle of it. Not at the edge, not along the road — but in the wet grassland, among the reeds, with mud underfoot. That is exactly where the laarzenpaden lead you.

Ruimte voor de Vecht, the network organisation that has been working on the sustainable development of the Vechtdal for over ten years, is laying these short trails through areas that are normally not accessible to visitors. Not long signposted walking routes, but deliberate detours into nature — for those who really want to look.

The trails are part of a broader series of projects under the name 'Broad Prosperity in the Vechtdal', funded through the Regio Deal Regio Zwolle. Alongside the trails, riverbanks are being de-stoned and work is underway to restore the water system. The result: a river landscape that breathes.

For guests of De Zon or Paping in Ommen, this is the Vechtdal within walking distance. A morning with boots on, following the river — and then back for breakfast.
