Starting point: at the foot of the ridge

Just south-west of Ommen, near Lemele, this walk begins at the foot of the ice-pushed ridge. The path climbs almost at once, so you soon feel this is the most undulating stretch of the Vechtdal.

Along the way: heath and juniper

On top of the Archemerberg you cross broad heathfields with countless juniper bushes, dark green cones among the purple. These are the ridges once pushed up by the land ice, so you walk higher here than is usual in the Netherlands.

Highlight: the view from the Lemelerberg

On the Lemelerberg you are rewarded with a wide view over the valley and the Regge below. On a clear day your gaze reaches far across forest and heath. Sit down for a while; this is the moment to soak up the silence.

Good to know

  • Unpaved and hilly; expect climbs and loose sandy paths.
  • Dogs are allowed on a leash; part is grazed nature reserve.
  • Little shade on the open heath, so plan for sun and water.

From Paping Hotel & Spa

After the descent you drive back to Paping Hotel & Spa in Ommen in a quarter of an hour. The spa awaits your tired legs: a moment in the warm water and the hills melt out of your calves. A walk that calls for a wellness evening.
