Restaurant De Commanderie

A table for everyone on their way, near Ootmarsum.

Restaurant De Commanderie takes its name from the Commanderie of the Teutonic Order that stood in Ootmarsum from 1262 to 1635, just behind today's open-air museum. The knight brothers who lived there had one clear calling: caring for travellers. De Commanderie carries that same hospitality forward today — a table for everyone on their way, after a walk through the Twente countryside or a visit to the historic town of Ootmarsum. Join us for lunch, drinks or dinner, with seasonal dishes from the region and views over the Twente landscape.

The story of De Commanderie

From 1262 to 1635, a Commanderie of the Teutonic Order stood in Ootmarsum, just behind today's open-air museum — a knightly order founded to care for wounded and weary travellers. Caring for the traveller was literally in this place's DNA, centuries before there was a hotel. The last commander, Johann Dietrich van Heiden, eventually traded his vows for love: he married, left the order, and with that the gates closed on the Teutonic Order in Ootmarsum. Look closely today and the history is still all around — in the street names of the Wildehof, at the Molenhuisje by the old watermill, and on the site of the Commanderie itself, a short walk from the town centre.
