Cyclist on a dike between wide polders in the Land van Maas en Waal, with fruit orchards along the path

A loop between two rivers

Land van Maas en Waal

Distance
27 km
Duration
2h 10m
Difficulty
Easy
Dog-friendly

A shorter loop for half a day, with Hoogeerd in Niftrik as start and finish. You ride into the narrow land between the two rivers, where the Maas and the Waal push the landscape close together.

Through the polder

Along quiet polder roads and cycle junctions you pass orchards that turn white and pink in spring. It is open country, with skies reaching in every direction and the odd church tower as a landmark.

Highlight: Wijchen castle

At Wijchen you ride past the Renaissance-style castle that towers above the old centre. A fine place to get off the bike before you start the loop back to the Maas.

Back over the dike

For the last stretch you follow the river again: the Maas dike brings you quietly back to Niftrik, with the floodplains on your left and the farms on your right.

Good to know

  • Almost flat and easy going, also with children or on an ordinary bike.
  • The polder roads are quiet, but you share them with farm traffic.
  • Bring water; refreshment stops along the way are limited.

Back at Hoogeerd you park your bike in the covered store and settle by the river. The hotel sits right on the Maas, an ideal base for exploring the region by bike.
