Starting point: into the forest from Ommen

From Ommen you soon turn into the Ommen forestry. The tarmac gives way to shady cycle paths beneath tall pines and beeches; a flat, relaxed route that suits a half day well.

Along the way: lanes and clearings

The route winds through varied woodland, with the occasional open patch of heath or an estate field. It is cool here on a warm day, and mostly you hear your own tyres and the birds above you.

Highlight: Eerde castle

The highlight is Eerde castle, rising among the greenery at the end of a stately lane. You needn't go inside to be impressed; the symmetry of the estate with its moats and lanes does the work for you.

Good to know

  • Mainly paved and flat; suited to a relaxed pace.
  • Dogs can join in a bike basket or trailer; the forest is very calm.
  • Combine it, if you like, with a short walk around the castle.

From Paping Hotel & Spa

Paping Hotel & Spa is the ideal starting point for this loop; the forests lie practically around the corner. When you return there is the spa and a quiet evening on the edge of Ommen. A day's cycling that betrays no hurry anywhere.
